TURNING FOOD WASTE INTO PLANT NUTRITION: INNOVATIVE THREE-COMPARTMENT WASTE BIN MEETS PATENTABILITY REQUIREMENTS IN VIETNAM

GIẢI PHÁP

Every day, households generate a significant amount of food waste. In most cases, this organic waste is mixed with other household refuse, leading to unpleasant odors, leachate generation, and increased collection and disposal costs.

But what if food waste could become a valuable resource instead of a disposal problem?

This idea is the foundation of the "Three-Compartment Waste Bin" Utility Solution, an innovative design that integrates household waste separation, on-site organic waste treatment, and plant cultivation. The solution has recently been determined by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IP Vietnam) to satisfy the legal requirements for utility solution protection, marking an important milestone toward the grant of a Utility Solution Patent.

An Innovative Utility Solution Recognized by IP Vietnam

More Than Just a Three-Compartment Waste Bin

At first glance, the product appears to be a conventional waste bin consisting of two waste compartments and one central planting compartment.

Its innovation, however, lies not in the number of compartments but in how they interact.

The two side compartments are designed with sloped bottom surfaces that direct liquid toward the central compartment. Open passages connect these compartments, allowing leachate generated during the decomposition of organic waste to flow naturally into the planting chamber, where it is absorbed by soil and plant roots as a natural nutrient source.

This simple yet effective design transforms a common household waste bin into a multifunctional environmental solution.

A Practical Innovation for Sustainable Waste Management

One of the most remarkable aspects of the invention is that it encourages behavioral change, rather than merely providing another waste container.

When users realize that healthy plant growth depends on correctly separating food waste, they naturally become more willing to sort waste at the source.

Conversely, mixing plastic bags, paper, or other non-biodegradable materials with food waste slows decomposition and reduces the effectiveness of the planting system.

As a result, the product creates an intuitive incentive for proper household waste separation instead of relying solely on regulations or public awareness campaigns.

Food Waste → Decomposition → Leachate → Soil → Plant Growth

Converting Waste into a Valuable Resource

As organic waste decomposes, nutrient-rich leachate is naturally produced.

Rather than becoming an environmental pollutant, this liquid is directed into the central planting compartment, where it nourishes plants and maintains soil moisture. An integrated drainage system, including an anti-flood valve and anti-clogging tube, helps regulate excess water and ensures reliable long-term operation.

The solution is particularly suitable for urban households with limited gardening space, enabling residents to grow vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants while simultaneously reducing the amount of food waste sent to municipal treatment facilities.

Recognized as Meeting Patentability Requirements

Following substantive examination, the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam concluded that the utility solution satisfies the legal requirements for protection.

According to the official notification, the application contains four claims, including one independent claim. Upon payment of the prescribed official fees, the applicant will proceed to the grant of a Utility Solution Patent.

This recognition confirms the technical merits and industrial applicability of the invention while establishing the legal basis for future commercialization and intellectual property protection.
